Technique Spotlight: Craft Ink Refill Painting

Updated: May 18, 2022

Years ago, when I was planning the next techniques for my techniques class, I ran across something really different - probably when I was searching for techniques on Pinterest. It's a technique that I hadn't used before, but I really really liked the look. It's called Craft Ink Refill Painting. The first sample I saw used Night of Navy card stock and the now retired Beautiful Day stamp set. It was made by a demonstrator for which unfortunately I cannot find the name. :( She did a beautiful job, didn't she? The final product turned out gorgeous!

So at techniques class, we made that card using the following instructions:

Stamp a line art image in Versamark ink on colored card stock. Emboss with white embossing powder. Squeeze some Whisper White Craft Ink refill on a clear block. Dip the brush tip of a Water Painter in your ink and color in your embossed image.

Isn't it great how the painted white becomes transparent as it dries, so it allows that Navy card stock to show through? I just love it!

Wednesday during What's Up! Stampers? on Facebook Live, I wanted to use the same technique, but I wanted to try a different color card stock for my embossed image. When planning the card, I decided to use green and find a line-art evergreen tree with which to make the focal point for the Craft Ink Refill Painting. The Most Wonderful Time Product Medley from the August-December Mini Catalog includes the stamp set with just the right tree! The Product Medley - which I love so much! - contains stamps, dies, Designer Series Paper (DSP), gold foil card stock pieces, die cut images, and accessories, so that you can be successful in your stamping. Everything matches and coordinates!

When creating the card, I chose the perfect DSP from the Product Medley, which laid out for me the color combo for this card, which is simple: Old Olive, Gold Foil, and Whisper White. The trees are completed using the Craft Ink Refill Painting technique, then cut out with the dies from the Most Wonderful Time Product Medley. The tinsel trim and gold stars that embellish the trees, as well as the "Deck the Halls," also come in the Product Medley.

-Old Olive card stock: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"

-Gold Foil Sheets: 3 7/8" x 5 1/8" and 3 1/8" x 3 3/8" (this one was cut from the center of the larger one)

-DSP from the Most Wonderful Time Product Medley: 3 3/4" x 5"

-Whisper White: 3" x 3 1/4" and 4" x 5 1/4" (for the inside of the card)
